We believe that academic and social goals should be
treated and discussed in relationship to each other, not separately, so we
work to develop both competence and confidence in children. We want our
students to be well trained in the basic academic disciplines, to fulfill
their creative potential, and to gain satisfaction in their physical,
emotional and social development. We want students to love learning and to
value knowledge, creativity and humor. Our goals are for students to be
open-minded and compassionate, to gain a sense of themselves and others, and
to understand and appreciate the diversity of the human condition. We
encourage children to become aware of their academic and social
responsibilities and to enjoy the sense of pride that comes from fulfilling
them. We value students’ questions and respect their struggles to achieve an
inner discipline. Finally, we want students to recognize that they have the
power and resources to effect change.
We aim to develop an ongoing excitement for learning by creating an environment where adults and children are free to experiment, to make mistakes, and to approach material with a sense of adventure and imagination. We emphasize learning by doing. This may mean that students not only read about the life cycle of trees, plants and butterflies, they also observe and track their changes, record them, share their findings and questions, and advocate for social policy that protects them. A child’s education at CLC demands the support of a diverse group of adults in the community. The faculty and staff actively engage with students for long periods of the day. Students get to know them and they get to know students more intimately than in other schools. Parents get a picture of this process in two ways:first through observing as their children learn and grow, second by participating with other parents in both school and non-school events. |
